From the 1941 Central High School Yearbook, Grand Rapids, MI. There is something beautiful about artifacts and heirlooms that were tossed away. There is something powerful in the eyes of women in old photographs. What kind of choices did they have? They were more trapped than me, and for that I grieve, and for not being there I am grateful, and man oh man everyone really trudged through it, without complaining much at all. Midwestern women who dealt with it, who looked after things, who were alive and had little sparkles in their eyes. Things are different now but a little the same too.
